The Best Cafes in Pokhara

Lakeside espresso, mountain-view bakeries and the roastery locals actually go to — the nine cafes worth your mornings in Pokhara.

Pokhara does mornings better than almost anywhere in Nepal. The Annapurnas are out before the clouds arrive, the lake is glassy, and the town smells of woodsmoke and freshly ground coffee. Nepal grows genuinely good arabica in the hills around Gulmi and Kavre, and Pokhara is where a lot of it ends up.

I spent three weeks here working through the Lakeside strip and the quieter Damside end. These are the nine cafes I kept going back to — ranked less by coffee-nerd precision and more by whether I wanted to stay for a second cup.

How coffee works in Pokhara

Most cafes open around 7am and the good ones fill by 8. Nepali-grown beans are usually labelled 'Himalayan arabica' — medium roast, low acidity, chocolatey. Espresso is competent almost everywhere; filter and pour-over are still a specialty-shop thing.

  • Expect NPR 180–350 for a flat white (roughly $1.30–2.60).
  • Wi-Fi is near-universal but slows down after 10am when the digital nomads arrive.
  • Cash is king outside the three or four biggest places.
  • Almost every cafe will make oat or soy milk on request — ask, it's rarely on the menu.
The best cup I had in Nepal cost two dollars and came with a view of a 7,000-metre mountain.

The nine cafes worth your mornings

Ordered roughly north to south along the lake, so you can walk between them in a single very caffeinated day.

Himalayan Java Lakeside
01$$

Himalayan Java Lakeside

Nepal's original specialty chain, but the Lakeside branch has a first-floor terrace that looks straight down Phewa Lake.

Why I recommend it: The most consistent espresso in town, and the only place I trust for a 7am cup before a Sarangkot drive.

AM/PM Organic Cafe
02$$

AM/PM Organic Cafe

Garden seating, house-baked sourdough and a breakfast plate big enough to replace lunch.

Why I recommend it: The single best breakfast in Pokhara. Get the eggs with the chilli-tomato achar.

Gaia Roastery
03$$

Gaia Roastery

A working roastery with six seats and a drum roaster running most afternoons. Beans from Gulmi and Sindhupalchok.

Why I recommend it: Ask which lot they roasted that morning — they'll usually brew you a comparison flight for free.

Perky Beans
04$

Perky Beans

Tiny, scrappy, always full of trekking guides swapping route notes over milk tea and cinnamon rolls.

Why I recommend it: This is where you find out which passes are actually open this week.

Caffe Concerto
05$$

Caffe Concerto

Better known for wood-fired pizza, but the morning cappuccino and the lake-facing porch are underrated.

Why I recommend it: Come at 4pm when the mist rolls in and the light goes gold on the water.

Godfather's Bakery
06$

Godfather's Bakery

Apple pie, cardamom buns and a queue of Nepali families on Saturday mornings.

Why I recommend it: The cardamom bun is the best pastry I ate in Nepal. Go before 10am or they're gone.

Byanjan Rooftop
07$$

Byanjan Rooftop

Three floors up on a quiet Damside lane, with an unobstructed Machhapuchhre view on clear mornings.

Why I recommend it: Worth the walk purely for the view. Order the masala coffee once, then switch back to espresso.

Mountain Path Coffee
08$$$

Mountain Path Coffee

The most serious brew bar in town — V60, Aeropress, and scales on the counter.

Why I recommend it: The only place in Pokhara doing single-origin pour-over properly. Skip the food.

Didi's Tea Corner
09$

Didi's Tea Corner

Not a cafe at all — a plastic-stool chiya stand near the boat jetty, run by the same family for twenty years.

Why I recommend it: The honest counterpoint to the whole list. NPR 30 milk tea, and better company than any of them.

A perfect cafe morning

If you only have one morning: espresso at Himalayan Java at 7, walk twenty minutes south along the water, breakfast at AM/PM around 8:30, then a cardamom bun from Godfather's for the road. You'll be back at your guesthouse before the heat arrives.

What to skip

The big lake-facing places with laminated photo menus and touts outside are exactly what they look like. There are four of them on the central strip; you'll know them when you see them. Walk another hundred metres.
