The trip

Trip overview

Three days is not enough to see Nepal, but it is exactly enough to see the Kathmandu Valley properly — which is a different thing from ticking off its monuments. This route front-loads each morning with one big site while the light is good and the air is clean, then spends the afternoons on foot in the old cities.

Everything here is doable by taxi and on your own two feet. There's no trekking, no early domestic flights, and no day where you're in a vehicle for more than an hour.

If you land late on day zero, sleep near Boudha rather than Thamel — you'll wake up inside the best part of day one.

The plan

Day by day

Day 1Boudha, Pashupatinath and the old city

Ease in on the east side of the valley: the biggest stupa in Nepal at dawn, the river temples mid-morning, then the Kathmandu backstreets on foot.

Morning

Be at Boudhanath by 6:30am for the kora — the clockwise circuit around the stupa with several hundred locals and monks. Breakfast on a rooftop overlooking the dome once you've done two laps.

Afternoon

Taxi twenty minutes to Pashupatinath. Walk the east bank for the view across the cremation ghats, then cut through the Mrigasthali forest. Back into the old city by 2pm for lunch in Asan.

Evening

Walk Thamel's edges rather than its centre — Chhetrapati, Jyatha, Thahity. Dinner in a Newari kitchen, then an early night to reset from the flight.

Where to eat
Utse (Tibetan, Thamel) for thukpa, or Newa Lahana in Kirtipur if you want the full Newari platter.
Where to stay
Kantipur Temple House, Thamel — a quiet carved-timber hotel on a lane just off the noise.
Estimated cost
$55 – $80

The practical part

Logistics

Getting around

  • Getting in

Tribhuvan International (KTM) is 6km from Thamel. Prepaid taxi desk in arrivals, NPR 700–900, 30–50 minutes depending on traffic.

  • Taxis

The default. Always agree the fare before getting in — NPR 400–700 for most in-valley hops, NPR 2,500–3,500 for a half-day hire.

  • Scooter

NPR 1,200/day. Fast and flexible for Patan and Bhaktapur, but Kathmandu traffic is not a place to learn.

  • On foot

The old cities are best walked. Bring an N95 for the dusty stretches — valley air quality is poor from December to March.

Where to stay

  • Dwarika's Hotel

    $$$$

A heritage-restoration project as much as a hotel. Worth one night even if you stay cheaper the rest.

  • Kantipur Temple House

    $$

Carved timber, no plastic, quiet lane off Thamel. The best value in central Kathmandu.

  • Club Himalaya, Nagarkot

    $$$

Book a north-facing room. You're paying for the sunrise, not the interiors.

Where to eat

  • Krishnarpan

    Traditional Newari

A six-to-twenty-two course Newari tasting menu at Dwarika's. Book two days ahead.

  • Newa Lahana

    Newari, community-run

Kirtipur hilltop, no English menu, unbeatable samay baji.

  • Utse

    Tibetan

Thamel institution. Thukpa and steamed buff momos.

  • Cafe Nyatapola

    Nepali

Inside a converted pagoda on Taumadhi Square, Bhaktapur.

Packing tips

  • Light down jacket — valley mornings drop below 10°C Oct–Mar
  • N95 mask for dusty winter streets
  • Filtered water bottle (Grayl or LifeStraw)
  • Slip-on shoes — you'll remove them at every temple
  • Cash in small NPR notes; ATMs cap at NPR 35,000
  • Universal adapter (Type C/D/M sockets)
  • Headtorch for power cuts
